Outer Banks Lighthouses
One of the most amazing attractions the Outer Banks has to offer is the 4 Lighthouses in the area. These spectacular feats of engineering have stood the test of time and of the harsh elements. These popular sites allow you to get a bird’s eye view of the area (if you are brave enough to climb to the top) and should be on your list of things you "must do" on your vacation.
Bodie Island Lighthouse -- (Pronounced BOD-EE), the Bodie Island Lighthouse is considered the twin of the Currituck Beach Light and stands between Currituck and Hatteras Light along the Outer Banks. It stands over 160 feet tall and has been recently remodeled. The keeper's house has been turned into a museum and Pea Island wildlife refuge nearby offers nature trails and fantastic bird watching during your visit.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse -- The most famous and recognizable Outer Banks landmark, the Cape Hatteras Light stands 210 feet tall and is the tallest brick lighthouse in the US. Threatened by the eroding shoreline, the Lighthouse was relocated almost 3000 feet west in 1999 completely intact -- which was a major engineering feat.
The Lighthouse is open each day for climbing and even features special night climbing tours available through the summer. Venture to the top of the 266 steps and take in the spectacular views!

Currituck Beach Lighthouse -- Opened back up to the public after a multimillion dollar restoration, the Currituck Beach Light and Keepers House and Museum are available for tours daily throughout the summer. The Currituck Beach Light is located in Corolla just north of the Whalehead Club. The 214 step climb to the top allows visitors to overlook Corolla Village, the Ocean and Sound.

Ocracoke Lighthouse - North Carolina's oldest operating Lighthouse. The Ocracoke light stands 75 feet tall and emits a beam of light 14 miles offshore to mark the channel. Although this light is not open for climbing, you can visit Ocracoke Island by way of a free ferry from Hatteras Island. Ocracoke Island is a fantastic day trip from the northern beaches. With its small village-like atmosphere and boutique shops and restaurants, this fishing village is an experience you won't soon forget!
