About Us
Atlantic Realty Outer Banks
Established in 1967, Turnpike Properties is a family-owned North Carolina company known for its longstanding excellence in real estate development and the hospitality industry.
Turnpike Properties is renowned for developing the prestigious Sanderling community on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. This remarkable development followed a significant contribution by the Slick Family, who generously donated over 3,000 acres of coastal Outer Banks property to the National Audubon Society, ensuring essential bird habitats were preserved. At the center of this development stands the iconic Sanderling Inn and Resort, thoughtfully restored from the historic Caffey’s Inlet Life-Saving Station No. 5. Built in 1874, Caffey’s Inlet Station is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the original seven stations established by the U.S. Life-Saving Service along the North Carolina coast.
The creation of Sanderling marked the start of a decades-long initiative across the northern Outer Banks, encompassing both the Sanderling community and a 285-lot vacation home neighborhood in Pine Island. Throughout its developments, Turnpike Properties has consistently prioritized conservation-minded construction, regional history and architectural integrity, and significant community investment along the Atlantic coastline.
Beyond Pine Island and Sanderling, Turnpike Properties has maintained its commitment to responsible development in several distinguished communities across the Carolinas, such as Kitty Hawk Cottages on Bald Head Island; Assembly Lakes in Litchfield, South Carolina; South Island Plantation in Georgetown, South Carolina; Windemere Island and Heronwood at Lake Norman, North Carolina; and the notable Pine Island Reserve, Pine Island Club, and most recently, Pine Island Limited in Corolla, North Carolina.
In 2019, Turnpike Properties expanded its legacy by acquiring Atlantic Realty Outer Banks, continuing to uphold its dedication to excellence and community-focused development.
